'The symphony is a world' Mahler proclaimed to Sibelius - and few composers have written music that conjures up as wide a range of musical imagery as his First Symphony. From the evocative opening, marked 'like a sound of nature', to a funeral march based on Frère Jacques, and from the sounds of military and folk bands to wistful love themes (taken from the song cycle also heard this evening), it is a work of enormous power and breadth.
